Manhattan Bunions

I want to talk to you a little bit about bunions. A bunion is a swelling on the side of the big toe joint which develops over time. Sometimes it can start to develop even from as young an age as 12 or 13 years old. It’s a hereditary condition so it generally runs in the family and it can be made worse by tight shoes but it is a family condition. It is a genetic condition so it is not something that is exclusively caused by tight shoes. Now there are some treatment options for a bunion to relieve the pain, however the definitive treatment to really get rid of a bunion permanently involves surgical treatment of it. It would involve an operation called a bunionectomy. The approach to this procedure involves a very cosmetic incision which is placed along the side of the foot so usually you would heal with a very imperceptible scar in most cases. The recurrence rate, which is a question that we get pretty often about this procedure, is very, very low. We’ll make sure to pick a procedure that minimizes the rate of recurrence. I would invite you to come into the office so we can take an x-ray. We’ll talk about your specific deformity and we’ll talk about how it correlates to the x-ray and then we’ll talk about procedure options. I will always make sure that you’re comfortable with the decision and that you are well informed about any procedures before we make any decisions.
